AND1 was founded on August 13th, 1993 in Paoli, Pennsylvania by Seth Berger, Jay Coen Gilbert and Tom Austin. The AND1 name was inspired by a phrase used by basketball pundits to describe a free throw that was fouled while scoring. The brand began by selling t-shirts out of the back of a car, but within two years AND1 clothing was sold in 1,500 stores across the US.

 

From then on, AND1 owned the summer. While most basketball brands hibernated, we awakened and brought the streets alive with the greatest show to hit the blacktop, the AND1 Mixtape Tour. From trash talking tees, shoes, clothes, mixtapes, tournaments, television shows and videos AND1 dominates the hip hop and basketball landscape. As part of its marketing strategy, AND1 started giving away mixtapes featuring streetball players doing stunts away with purchases - The birth of the legendary Mixtape tour.
